MAKING MOVES - Is he the winner of the winter transfer window? 🤔

Emery, Aston Villa

06:43

Deadline Day = Done! ✅

Well, another Transfer Deadline Day comes to a close, and what an interesting one it was! Some big new additions for Aston Villa and Spurs who have bolstered their ranks ahead of a surge in respective European competitions, while Ben Chilwell swaps Chelsea for Crystal Palace and Man City are boosted by the arrival of Nico Gonzalez.

Wolves, Everton and Axel Disasi kept us waiting until the early hours, but which sides will be the biggest winners and losers of the transfer window? Only time will Tel - get it?

As for the Premier League itself, we’re back on Wednesday 12 February to give you all the updates from the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park - it’s sure to be a good one. See you then! 👋

06:41

Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd:

"There’s been a few clubs that will be delighted to have been able to keep a hold of their players. Arsenal have looked to bring in a striker, Liverpool have not really had to do anything.

"There’s one thing about Arsenal, they’ve dived and spent money on players who have not really worked for them, if they’re going to spend big money they should do it in the summer, give a new signing time to come in and hit the ground running.”

06:39

Premier League pundit Chris Sutton on Arsenal - who didn't make a signing in January:

“At the start of the season, Mikel Arteta referred back to last season and said he was happy without bringing a recognised No.9 in as they have goals from all other areas. But saying that the margins are so fine to win a Premier League, I think Arteta would have felt if he could have got a deal over the line for a striker, it might have been the difference between winning the title and not.

“They have been unlucky with Bukayo Saka, he’s out for a fairly substantial length of time. In many ways, it is safety in numbers, so if they could have got another move over the line it would have been a great coup. If they have one or two more injuries it will be a struggle to topple Liverpool.”

AXEL RISING - Disasi caps a stunning window for Villa

Axel Disasi, Chelsea

06:30

Aston Villa makes Axel Disasi their fifth winter signing

Chelsea’s Axel Disasi has joined Aston Villa on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 season, with a £5 million loan fee included but no buy option. The French international had attracted interest from Spurs during the transfer window, but will now move to the west Midlands after struggling for minutes with the Blues this season.

26-year-old Disasi arrived at Chelsea from AS Monaco in the summer of 2023, having made six appearances in the Premier League and captained the side during their UEFA Europa Conference League campaign. Disasi is the fifth signing Unai Emery has made during the transfer window as Aston Villa strengthen their squad ahead of a revived Champions League push.

06:28

All you need to know about Marco Asensio

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Marco Asensio from Paris Saint-Germain on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.

The three-time UEFA Champions League winner with Real Madrid is the Villans fourth arrival of the January transfer window, after Donyell Malen, Andres Garcia and Marcus Rashford.

Chelsea’s Harvey Vale completes transfer to QPR

Chelsea’s midfielder Harvey Vale has completed a permanent transfer to Queens Park Rangers. Having joined the youth ranks at Cobham, Vale made his way through the U13s and U18s before signing his first professional contract in September 2020.

Given his first senior start in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Brentford during the 2021/22 season, Vale then enjoyed loan spells at Hull City and Bristol Rovers before returning to west London under Enzo Maresca. Having featured twice for the Blues this season, Vale now heads north to QPR for a new chapter.

Watch: Why Chilwell is a perfect fit for Crystal Palace

Joe Cole and Michael Owen say Ben Chilwell is ideally suited to Oliver Glasner's style of play after he joined Crystal Palace on loan from Chelsea

06:16

What will Palace get from Ben Chilwell?

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell has completed a loan move to Crystal Palace for the remainder of the season.

The 28-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Leicester City in August 2020, becomes the Eagles' second arrival of the January transfer window, after Romain Esse arrived from Millwall.

What did Chilwell have to say? When could Chilwell feature for Palace? Find out in the below article...

06:14

Man City’s Jacob Wright joins Norwich on loan

Manchester City’s Jacob Wright has joined Norwich on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 season. 19-year-old Wright has made four senior appearances for City across the last two campaigns, but will now head to Carrow Road to link up with Johannes Hoff Thorup until the summer.

Having made his debut for the club last January in City’s 5-0 win over Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup, midfielder Wright then went on to feature in his first Champions League game against FC Copenhagen at the Etihad, helping his side to a 3-1 victory over the visitors. He made two appearances as a substitute in City’s League cup campaign, first at home to Watford as well as a loss on the road to Spurs.

06:12

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson on Gonzalez:

"I've not seen this lad play so don't know too much about him. But they need players in midfield. A lot of people say it's not just Rodri. It is just Rodri.

"Rodri sees danger, Rodri is disciplined, Rodri stays in the centre, he gets forward and sits back and protects the backline as well, and he passes the ball through the line very quickly.

"The issue with Gonzalez is as soon as Rodri's fit that's it. I don't think he plays. Unless you play them together and I don't think you need to. This is the problem with wages and buying players, you forget that by the start of next season, this guy is sitting on the bench with big money. You then look at McAtee with a brilliant young future and they will have to sell him for the fair play rules. It's a knock-on effect. If they're buy Gonzalez, they must be panicking badly to get into the top four."

06:09

Who is Man City new boy Nico Gonzalez?

Manchester City have signed Spanish midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Porto on a four-and-a-half-year contract.

The 23-year-old becomes City’s fourth arrival of the January transfer window following an impressive start to the season in Portugal, scoring seven goals and providing six assists across 29 appearances in all competitions.

What did he have to say about the move? Where does he fit in at City? When could Gonzalez feature for City? Find out here...

06:05

Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison On Ben Chilwell’s move to Palace:

“It’s an unbelievable signing. He’s an England international and he wants to get back playing football. Someone of his quality should be playing. I don’t like how he’s been treated at Chelsea. Chilwell will put pressure on Tyrick Mitchell. Palace are now shopping in this kind of market. I’m buzzing.”

06:02

Wolves Sporting director Matt Hobbs on Munetsi signing:

“It was important for us that Vitor has a number of options in each position and Marshall is a well-rounded midfielder who is physically up for the challenge of the Premier League.

“Marshall’s played with [Emmanuel Agbadou], who has settled quickly into the group, and now he’ll have the support of everyone here at the club. He’ll be another option for Vitor and we’re looking forward to having him as part of the club.”

06:00

Wolves add Marshall Munetsi to squad

“Carlos has Premier League experience, he’s still young and we believe he can bring some energy to the team which will help us between now and the end of the season.”

05:52

Everton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz:

“I am very happy to join Everton, such a great club, with a very good fanbase. I'm very happy and I'm looking forward to start training with my teammates and see the fans at the stadium.

“I am ready for any challenge with this beautiful club so that's why I came and accepted the offer to keep fighting for my dreams. I want to tell the fans that whenever I wear this shirt, I will give my best, I will give everything I have to take Everton to the top, which is where they deserve to be.”

05:49

Everton sign midfielder Carlos Alcaraz from Flamengo

Everton have signed Flamengo’s Carlos Alcaraz on a loan deal for the remainder of the 2024/25 season. Traditionally a midfielder, the Argentine international has previously played for Southampton before heading to Juventus for a loan spell during the 2023/24 campaign.

Having spent two years with the Saints, Alcaraz returns to the Premier League after only joining Flamengo last August for a club record fee of £16 million.

05:45

Emmanuel Dennis joins Blackburn on loan

Nott’m Forest’s Emmanuel Dennis has joined Blackburn Rovers on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 season. The 27-year-old striker has previously had spells with Istanbul Basaksehir and Watford after arriving to English football in 2021.

Amassing six starts and two goals for Forest in the League, Dennis will now head to a Blackburn side in need of a striker with frontman Yuki Ohashi facing another three to four weeks on the sidelines.

05:40

Southampton recruit Victor Udoh

Southampton have added Victor Udoh from Royal Antwerp on a three-and-a-half-year contract. He will initially team up with their Under 21s squad.

05:35

Wolves Chairman Jeff Shi on Djiga:

“We’re delighted to welcome Nasser to the club. This signing took hard work from a number of people, and we’re looking forward to seeing Nasser become integrated into the Wolves family.

“It was important that we supported Vitor this window and this signing is a strong investment for the club, with Nasser having great potential, and we’re looking forward to seeing him develop under our coaching staff.”

05:32

Wolves confirm Nasser Djiga move

Wolves have signed defender Nasser Dijga from Red Star Belgrade on a contract that runs until 2030. 22-year-old Dijga has spent the past 18 months in the Serbian SuperLiga, following 22 appearances for French outfit Nimes, and will now head to the west Midlands on the long-term deal which also includes a 12-month option.

Dijga has become a regular for the Serbian outfit, with Red Star claiming the SuperLiga and Serbian Cup double last season as well as the heights of Champions League action. Having started all European ties, Dijga was a crucial part of the club’s unbeaten first half of the campaign during which they dropped points on only one outing.

05:30

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher on Tel:

"The fact that Tottenham are getting him on loan now, I think that’s a good deal for both teams. He can get a look at Tottenham, Tottenham can get a look at him – a young player with potential.

"He hasn’t played too much football at Bayern Munich at all. If he settles in well at Tottenham, he will get definitely lots of chances. They creates chances and scores goals, they are one of the most exciting teams in the league.

"So I think this move works for player and the club. He obviously fell out of favour at Bayern Munich, he didn’t get the minutes he would have liked. So this works for everybody."

04:40

Hello Nico, welcome to the Premier League 👋

04:38

Premier League pundit Michael Owen:

“I’m sure Pep Guardiola knows a lot about him. A holding midfielder that they have needed for some time, they have looked light in midfield. Rodri will walk straight back into the team when he is fit and firing, but it is some good cover.

“It is a problem they probably need. Whether they can justify paying the money for a back-up for Rodri? Or whether he can play alongside Rodri?”

04:36

Man City midfielder Nico Gonzalez:

“This is the perfect opportunity for me at this stage of my career. I am 23 and I want to test myself in England. There’s no better club than Manchester City for me to do that.

“Look at the squad they have here. It’s unbelievable, full of world-class players. There isn’t a footballer in the world who would not want to be part of this set-up. I know the reputation Pep has and I cannot wait to work with him. In fact, I am honoured he wants me to play in his team.

"I am truly excited. I just want to meet my teammates, and the staff here and then I want to play in front of the City fans!”

04:33

Man City sign Nico Gonzalez

Manchester City have a fourth winter signing, and maybe the Rodri replacement they have needed since the Balon d'Or winner's injury. Nico Gonzalez signs a four-and-a-half-year deal from Porto, having previously come through the Barcelona academy.

He joins Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Omar Marmoush in arriving at the Etihad this month.

What is a deal sheet?

Clubs sometimes conclude deals at the last minute and it is not always easy for them to get everything completed and sent over by the deadline.

The deal sheet allows a club to confirm that a deal has been reached in order to allow for additional time to submit the remaining documentation.

For a deadline of 23:00, the deal sheet cannot be used before 21:00 and needs to arrive fully completed before the transfer window closes.

Once the sheet arrives, clubs have got another two hours, or until 01:00, in which to submit the full paperwork.

But if a club are looking to complete an international transfer, they still have to comply with the FIFA Transfer Matching System (TMS) deadline of midnight.

More from Patrick Dorgu:

On his mindset: "For me, it's the most important thing because there's a lot of talk about and around football. And you really need to be strong outside of football as well.

"And, when I've been in Italy, I've lived alone. Of course, my family is visiting me a lot, but you need to be really good mentally to stay focused and concentrate on football."

On wearing No.13: "I had it since I came to Lecce. I think it's good to keep going with what's going good so I think, yeah, no.13 is working really good for me at the moment."

23:50

Man Utd defender Patrick Dorgu:

"It feels amazing to be part of the family. I'm very excited to get going. I have heard about the incredible support and I'm happy to be one of the players of United now.

"It's a huge club. It's the biggest club in England and I'm really looking forward to working with the new manager [Ruben Amorim] and I feel the system suits me really well. So I'm excited to be here. I think I'm going to bring a lot of intensity and physique on the pitch. And a lot of energy and running."

23:45

Joe O'Brien-Whitmarsh on joining Accrington on loan:

"I just really wanted to get back into men’s football. I had a period back home in Ireland playing men's football. I played for Cork City, I spent five seasons there and one year in the first team. I played around 25-30 times so I am not naive to men’s football.

"I moved to Southampton just over 12 months ago and have been playing 21s football. I have had the odd time training with the first team and made my debut in the Carabao Cup. I feel I can offer something positive here and this was the perfect opportunity for me."

23:40

Southampton have sent midfielder Joe O'Brien-Whitmarsh out on loan to League Two club Accrington Stanley. It is his first time away from Saints since joining from Cork City last January.

Clubs sometimes conclude deals at the last minute and it is not always easy for them to get everything completed and sent over by the deadline.

So, how exactly do transfers happen?

All those questions are answered and more in this article.

How Premier League transfer deals get done

23:20

Sky Sports pundit Chris Sutton on Marcus Rashford joining Villa:

"Time will tell [how the move will go]. It is up to Marcus Rashford. From Aston Villa’s perspective, if they are getting the Rashford from a few years ago it will be thrilling for them and he will certainly make the team better.

"Essentially it is a trial period for him. If he knuckles down it could suit both parties. He needs to get his head down, do the basics and work hard. Wherever he plays, he needs to take this opportunity to get his career back on track."

23:15

Caylan Vickers on joining Mansfield on loan:

"I’m really excited to be here. I’m an attacking-minded player, quite creative and skilful who hopes to get some goals and assists.

"The manager (Nigel Clough) and his experience, with everything he’s done in football, was a real factor in why I wanted to come here. It’ll hopefully be a really good experience here and I’ll do as much as I can to help the team."

23:10

Vickers heads to League One Mansfield

23:05

MK Dons boss Scott Lindsey on Patterson:

"Travis is a versatile young player with heaps of potential. He's very highly thought of at Aston Villa which speaks for itself, and is at a good age to head out on loan and get his first taste of senior football.

"He's got fantastic natural ability and a great work ethic, so it's up to us to help him get up to speed as quickly as possible. I'm really looking forward to seeing what he can do."

23:00

Aston Villa's Travis Patterson on joining MK Dons on loan:

"I spoke to Liam Sweeting and Scott Lindsey on the phone and they were both very convincing! I think this is a big club, the stadium is great, I've trained today and the players look good, it's a good group. I think we've got a real chance of getting promoted and I think I can help the side do that!

"I'm a full-back but I do like to get up the pitch quite a lot! I'd probably consider myself more of a wing-back, I like to get crosses into the box. I'm good at running with the ball. On the other side of things, I'm good at one-on-one defending, so I think I can be an asset to the side."

Aston Villa loan out Patterson

Aston Villa have allowed full-back Travis Patterson to join League Two side MK Dons on loan until the end of the season. It is the first time the 19-year-old, who is an England Under 19 international, will play regular senior football. Patterson made his Villa debut in the Carabao Cup in September.

Deadline Day so far…

With under six hours until the transfer window slams shut, there have been three major moves completed today.

West Ham, who face Chelsea tonight, and Brighton have been the busiest two clubs. In fact, both were involved in Evan Ferguson moving from the south coast to east London on loan.

The Seagulls have also added Stefanos Tzimas from FC Nuremberg, while the Hammers have recalled James Ward-Prowse from Nottingham Forest.

More from Carragher on Liverpool:

"For me, I have that much trust over what these guys tend to do over the last eight to ten years. Even if I think they should buy, I look at the operation at Liverpool and go: they know more than me.

"Every fan gets excited about players coming in – I would love Liverpool to sign another defender – but I trust these people know what they’re doing because their track record says they do."

22:20

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher on Liverpool's transfer window:

"There’s definitely areas of Liverpool’s team that can be really improved. But I think that is something for the summer. Centre forward is a position they could really improve in. I think attacking midfield is another one. A left-sided defender too.

"If those players were available right now, I’m not sure they would do the attacking ones because they have enough numbers there. But I think they need to side a left-back – or a left-sided centre-back or left-back – but I am sure they will come in the summer."

Carragher on whether this is Rashford's last chance:

"We say that a lot but footballers always seem to get a second chance. Certainly someone who has had the pedigree of Rashford, he’s always shown he has the quality but maybe not often enough. Like all managers, Emery will have that ego that he is the manager to unlock that, to get Rashford back to his best."

22:05

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher on Marcus Rashford:

"I think it’s a good move for Rashford. There was talk of some of the biggest clubs in Europe buying him – I never saw that. But there’s no doubt Aston Villa are one of the biggest clubs in this country and they’ve got a fantastic manager. And Unai Emery does get the best out of players more often than not. So it’s a decent move.

"And it’s a good move for Villa as well. There was always a problem that they had Duran and Watkins as both could only play centre forward. Now and again, Watkins could play wide but it wasn’t his strongest suit. So it was always going to be a problem, one had to go.

"Rashford gives you, as an option, through the middle and on the left. He can play with Watkins. And if Watkins is injured, which it looks like he may be, Rashford can get a go through the middle. It gives Emery and the Villa team more options -and there’s also more football for him to play,. Because there was no chance he was going to get that at Manchester United."

21:35

Where does Forest's 7-0 victory rank among the BIGGEST WINS ever?

After Nottingham Forest's 7-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, we take a look at the biggest victories in Premier League history.

There have been FOUR occasions of a team winning 9-0 in a Premier League match, with Manchester United doing so TWICE.

The last time a team won 9-0 was in 2022/23 when Liverpool thumped AFC Bournemouth.

Incredibly, Forest's 7-0 win does not even enter the top 10 for biggest wins in Premier League history.

In addition to the four 9-0s, there have been another SEVEN occasions of a team winning by EIGHT goals. The most recent 8-0 was Sheffield United 0-8 Newcastle United in 2023/24.

So, Forest's 7-0 win ranks as the joint-12th biggest win in Premier League history.

Gary Lineker was 10-years-old when in 1971 he began his footballing journey by walking through the doors at Aylestone Park Football Club in Leicester.

His five years at Aylestone Park was the start of a glittering career in football that took him to the heights of the game with Leicester City, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona and England, and then into broadcasting as host of BBC's Match of the Day following his retirement from playing.

After almost 20 years at Man Utd, Marcus Rashford has joined Aston Villa on loan. Can he produce more goals like this in claret and blue?

19:20

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson on Marcus Rashford:

"He's having an unbelievable opportunity, he's going to one of the top teams in the Premier League. Great club, great support. The one trick we're all missing here is he has to take his head with him. Nothing changes. It's a big gamble, a huge gamble for Amorim as well. I just worry that it's been a long time for him, you can't just turn it on a tap. There have been problems.

"And I hope he gets it sorted for Villa and the lad's sake. He's been given an unbelievable opportunity at a great club and he has to take it. It's not the case of turn up, different shirt, it will be alright. I don't know about it, I hope they do get it right."

19:15

Marcus Rashford on settling in at Aston Villa:

"This is my first time playing for any other team, so you never really know what to expect but I feel excited more than scared at coming into a completely new environment. With those lads [England team-mates Tyrone Mings and Ollie Watkins] being here it's definitely good."

19:10

The Scout on Marcus Rashford:

"Marcus Rashford’s price of £6.6m is somewhat prohibitive in Fantasy when his new team-mate Morgan Rogers (£5.6m) costs £1.0m less. Nonetheless, if Rashford can immediately earn a starting role Gameweek 25, a home encounter with Ipswich looks promising for Villa's attackers."

"He's 100 times better than anyone Man Utd have in the front line. Not Amad, he's a young kid - but he's much better than Hojlund and Zirkzee at the moment."

18:55

Sky Sports pundit Tim Sherwood on Man Utd:

"I agree with no panic buying when it's not panic stations. But it is panic stations at Man Utd. It's never been more panic stations there.

"Surely a club like Man Utd are writing off this season. That's what they're telling us [ by not buying someone]. They won't get relegated but they're in the Europa League, third favourites to win that. Based on what, I don't know, maybe it's because of Man Utd.

"If you can find a player, get the correct signing into the club, they can win the Europa League and get into the Champions League."

The Premier League has launched a new mental health resource for children focused on how they can build their self-esteem.

The resource is available to more than 19,000 primary schools across England and Wales through the League's primary school education programme, Premier League Primary Stars.

Available for Children’s Mental Health Week, the free resource contains activities and content that encourage young people to build their resilience, try new things and use positive self-talk.

Alongside input from teachers and mental health experts, it features advice from 10 current Premier League players as well as former England internationals Theo Walcott and Jill Scott MBE.

The self-esteem resource launch comes as the Premier League celebrates 'More Than A Game', a two-week period showcasing the League's world-leading investment into all levels of football and community programmes run by clubs that positively impact millions of people.

18:25

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson on Arsenal:

"They still need a striker. When the Man City game went 1-1, you thought of Havertz's chance for 2-0. They went on to win the game comfortably, but it could have gone the other way. A natural goalscorer scores that goal. Havertz gets his goal, which is harder than the one he missed.

"Unless they get Watkins, I don't see the reason for them going to get one. They might as well wait for next season. If Liverpool win their game in hand next week, even if Arsenal had Haaland they wouldn't win the league. Nine points is a lot with the amount of games left.

"So unless they get Watkins, because that's for the future as well, I wouldn't panic and wait for the summer."
