GOT THE BLUES – Chelsea struggling for form

Maresca, Chelsea

17:38

Chelsea’s form has dropped

Chelsea have slipped down to sixth, courtesy of four defeats from their last eight Premier League matches. Defeat at Brighton last Friday was the first time in more than three years that Chelsea have failed to have a shot on target in a PL match.

They have won 13 Premier League away matches against Aston Villa, only winning more at Tottenham (16) and Southampton (15) in the competition’s history.

17:37

Aston Villa could use a win

Aston Villa are winless since the middle of January – five matches since then, with four ending in draws. Their home record against Chelsea isn’t great, with just two wins from their last 11.

Fan Mail: Mitoma surprises Japanese fan of Brighton for 50 years

One person who will be firmly behind Brighton today is 72-year-old Kazuo Sobajima. He moved to Brighton from Japan in 1973 and spent five years there, where he became an Albion fan.

Distance made supporting the club difficult, but their promotion to the Premier League in 2017 changed that for the better.

Kazuo, who’s called Charlie by his friends, wrote a heartfelt letter to Kaoru Mitoma, and the club invited him to the Amex Stadium for his 72nd birthday to watch their match against Chelsea. Our next post has the video – but be warned, it’s an emotional watch.

17:31

Brighton head across the coast

Brighton’s record at Southampton is good. Six visits to St Mary’s Stadium, two wins, four draws. That being said, their record this season is disproportionately weighted towards playing teams higher in the table.

Six of their nine wins this season have been against top-half teams, with their 46% win rate topping the 25% win rate they have against bottom-half teams – just three victories in 12.

17:30

Southampton’s struggles at home continue

Southampton have lost each of their last seven Premier League home matches, conceding at least three goals in six of these.

The only sides to lose eight or more in a row at home within a single campaign are Watford (11 in 2021/22), Wolves (nine in 2011/12) and Sunderland (eight in 2002/03).

17:28

DIVING DELAP – Ipswich earnt well-deserved point against Villa

Delap, Ipswich

17:26

Spurs aim for some rare winning form

Spurs’ win over Man Utd made it two consecutive PL wins for only the second time this season. They last won three in a row in December 2023, while May 2022 was the last time they did it without conceding a goal.

17:25

Ipswich eyeing up League double over Spurs

Ipswich have won their last four Premier League fixtures against Tottenham, a run which goes back to 2000.

Their home record remains a concern. No side has won fewer matches (one) or scored fewer goals (nine) at home in the Premier League this season. Since beating Chelsea in December, they’ve lost their last three at Portman Road by an aggregate score of 10-1.

17:23

FEELING GOOD – Fulham bested Nott’m Forest last time out

Silva, Fulham

17:21

Crystal Palace have good form on the road

Crystal Palace have won their last three Premier League away matches, all by a 2-0 scoreline – they’ve never won four in a row on the road in the top flight. They last won four straight away league matches in February 2004 in the second tier (when they won five) but have never done so without conceding before.

17:20

Fulham love a home derby

Fulham have three wins from their last four, which currently has them sitting in eighth. Their record in home London derbies is pretty good – seven unbeaten against fellow teams from the capital.

They can complete the double over Palace for the first time in 24 years.

17:18

CHERRY ON TOP – Bournemouth in fine form ahead of visit from Wolves

Bournemouth

17:16

Wolves’ happy hunting ground

Wolves have never lost a Premier League match at Vitality Stadium, with two wins and two draws.

This is Wolves’ fourth consecutive Premier League away game against a side starting the day in the top six of the table, losing each of the other three. They could end the day 18th, should they lose and Ipswich win.

17:15

Bournemouth having an incredible time

Bournemouth’s excellent season rolls on, and they’ll move into fourth place with a win today. They’ve lost only once in their last 13 matches, and have won three of their last four against Wolves.

Those three wins were all at Molineux, though.

17:13

BRACE YOURSELF – Merino double helped Gunners to win v Foxes

Arsenal, Merino

17:11

West Ham need a pick-me-up

Graham Potter won his first PL match in charge of West Ham, but it’s three defeats and a draw since. They won at Emirates Stadium last season, last winning consecutive matches away to Arsenal in the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons.

17:10

Arsenal look to close gap

Liverpool’s draw at Aston Villa on Wednesday means that Arsenal have the chance to cut the gap at the top to five points, before Arne Slot’s side face Man City tomorrow.

Arsenal have won 37 Premier League matches against West Ham – they’ve only beaten Everton (38) more often in the competition, while it’s the most defeats the Hammers have suffered against a side.

17:08

Still to come today...

Let’s park our build-up of Everton v Man Utd for now, because that match is followed by six others over the course of the day, so here’s a flavour of what’s still to come.

17:06

COMING UP SHORT – Man Utd have blanked in 10 matches this season

Rasmus Hojlund

17:04

Red Devils like playing Everton

Man Utd have won their last two away league fixtures against Everton, winning 2-1 in October 2022 and 3-0 in November 2023. They last won three in a row at Goodison Park in September 2007, while they last kept back-to-back clean sheets at the Toffees in August 1997.

17:02

A lack of Man Utd goals

Manchester United’s defeat at Spurs made it 10 matches this season in which they’ve failed to score, while it’s just one first-half goal in the last 10 Premier League matches.

They begin today in 15th, and could be overtaken by West Ham.

17:00

OLD FRIENDS – Moyes set for visit from former club

David Moyes, Everton

16:58

Everton defender James Tarkowski:

"It has been special [at Goodison Park]. I have had some special memories here, so far. Most teams get that new manager bounce, but we are beyond that a little bit. I think we can be a lot better, but the results are the most important thing at the minute.

"It comes from the wins more than anything. We are building from that."

16:56

Moyes looks to haunt former club

David Moyes has won his last two Premier League home matches against Manchester United, beating them 1-0 and 2-0 with West Ham in May and December 2023. He also won his last home league fixture against the Red Devils in charge of Everton, beating them 1-0 in August 2012.

16:54

Everton are the PL’s form side

David Moyes’ return to Everton has marked a huge turnaround in form, with 13 points coming from their six matches since he took charge. It means they sit 13 points clear of relegation and, while those of an Everton persuasion may not consider themselves safe as yet, they certainly have quite the buffer.

TEAM NEWS – Everton v Man Utd (12:30 GMT)

A single change for the Toffees, as Carlos Alcaraz makes way for Abdoulaye Doucoure in the middle of the pack. That comes after Everton’s late victory at Crystal Palace last weekend.

Ruben Amorim also opts for one swap. Manuel Ugarte starts for the visitors, replacing Alejandro Garnacho who is on the bench for today’s visit to Merseyside. The Red Devils were on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline in their visit to Spurs last time out.

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank:

“It's not easy to win in the Premier League, it's not easy to win away. It's not easy to win 4-0 away. I know Leicester are not in a good way, but Arsenal were here a few days ago and they only won 2-0. This is the first time we've won two games in a row, it's a little bit strange!”

16:38

Friday night: Leicester 0-4 Brentford

Brentford had an excellent Friday night as they left Leicester with a 4-0 victory. First-half goals from Yoane Wissa, Bryan Mbeumo, and Christian Norgaard set up comfort, before Fabio Carvalho added to the tally late on.

It’s Leicester’s sixth home defeat in a row, while Brentford have won four away matches in a row for the first time ever in their top-flight history.
